Nowadays many of us have become addicted to social media like Instagram. You may not know that Instagram or any other social media tries to manipulate our minds all the time. They need us to spend our precious time on their platform, however, we must be aware of this and stop spending our time on it.

I’m not saying that we should not use Instagram or any other social media apps, however, we should not spend too much time on them.

Using Instagram is not a bad thing at all. If you have a business you can promote it or if you are interested in a special topic you can work through that on Instagram and gain many followers and perhaps one day makes good money. I can talk about the positive aspect of social media like hell. But I’m going to do that, maybe in another article. 

So now let’s go through some of the stuff that we can do to overcome Instagram addiction.

Do The Following Steps To Get Over Instagram Addiction

Step 1. Deactivate your Instagram for a while

If Instagram distracts your mind and your time to such an extent that you can’t focus on your tasks anymore, then simply deactivate it for some time. This is temporary and you can activate it later. 

Once I was addicted to Instagram and I just deactivated it and didn’t come back for a couple of months. To be honest, it wasn’t an easy thing to do, however, I did this and got rid of the addiction. You may think that it’s easier said than done, but believe me, if I could do it you can too. 

Step 2. Set a time limit

This is a useful method if you are addicted to Instagram. By following this method, hopefully, you can get over the addiction. Actually, there are two things you can do. You can either set a time limit for yourself outside of the app or you can do this through the app which I think is far better.

If you don’t know how to do that, simply follow the steps below and do it.

  1. Open the app and go to your profile.
  2. From there tap the three horizontal lines.
  3. Now tap “Your activity“.
  4. Here you can see a bunch of options. You should choose the first one which is “Time spent“.
  5. Now there are two things you can do. You can either choose “Set reminder to take breaks“, or you can choose,” Set daily limit time“. Almost both of the options work the same and it is just a matter of preferences. However, in your case, the latter which is daily is better.

So the former asks you to set a time while you are using the app and you can set a time limit from 10 minutes up to 30 minutes. So let’s say you set a time limit of 20 minutes. After the time limit is reached, the app will remind you to take a break. However, the latter option is better as I said and it allows you to choose between 15 minutes up to 2 hours. This is for daily use.

This method only works if you are serious about overcoming your Instagram addiction.

Step 3. Turn the notifications off

What is it that you are so interested in that you want to be notified all the time? Believe it or not, this can ruin your effort toward overcoming the addiction. So turn it off and don’t give a damn to trivialities, because you’ve got so much important stuff to do my friend.

You won’t lose anything by turning the notifications off, yet you gain much time to focus on your tasks. So turn it off right now.

Step 4. Set goals for yourself 

No offense, but I guess you don’t have any goals.  If you had some goals to accomplish you wouldn’t simply waste your precious time. I hope you understand this. Setting goals is really important, especially if you want to get over Instagram or any other types of addictions.

So set some goals for yourself and dedicate yourself to achieving them. This can help you not only get rid of your Instagram addiction but also helps you to feel better.

Step 5. Keep yourself busy

Do some activity to even forget about Instagram. There is a bunch of stuff you can do. You can read a book, you can call a friend, you can watch a movie or something, you can take a walk, and you can learn a new language and so on. 

I’m sure there are many activities that you are interested in, so do one of those.

Step 6. Delete you Instagram

You can also consider deleting the Instagram app for a few weeks or even months. And you should not install the app again until you feel that you are not addicted to it anymore.

Sometimes when I feel that I’ve become addicted to the app or it just distracts my mind, I simply delete it for a few weeks and focus on my task. Also, by doing this I feel a lot better because I’ll have more time to spend on important matters in my life.


Instagram addiction can be a time killer and we should do something about it before we waste more of our precious time. There are many things we can do to get over Instagram addiction. However, the steps that you’ve read in this article are some of the best that I have provided for you.
